Assistant U.S. Education Secretary Stump to Visit Las Vegas’ East Career Technical Academy, Morris Sunset East High School and Henderson’s Lake Mead Christian Academy

Assistant U.S. Secretary of Education Scott Stump will visit Las Vegas’ East Career Technical Academy and Morris Sunset East High School, as well as Lake Mead Christian Academy in Henderson, Nevada, Wednesday as part of the U.S. Department of Education’s 2019 National Back to School Tour.

Officially known as the Education Freedom Tour, the visits will spotlight schools that are providing education options that meet students’ unique needs.

Stump will begin his day at 9 a.m. PDT by touring Lake Mead Christian Academy in Henderson. He will see classes in AP government, pre-calculus, Spanish and dance. Lake Mead is the oldest continuously operating K-12 school in Henderson. The high school was the first in the area to have a one-to-one laptop program, and school leaders have turned their innovative focus toward dual credit and student interning opportunities. A press availability will be held at 10:15 a.m.

From 12:30 to 2 p.m. PDT, Stump will visit East Career Technical Academy, a public magnet school in Las Vegas. In a student-led tour, Stump will see classes in construction, medical studies, IT and mechanical technology. Students in the school’s Early Childhood program operate an early childhood education laboratory school on-site, known as Tiny Titan Preschool. East Career’s graduation rate in 2017-18 was 99.7%. A press availability will be held at 2 p.m. PDT

Later from 3:30 to 5 p.m. PDT, Stump will tour Morris Sunset East High School in Las Vegas. Morris is a “Sunset,” credit recovery high school, which operates an evening schedule within the Clark County School District. As an “alternative choice” high school, it provides students who may not have succeeded in a traditional, public school setting with the opportunity to pursue credit recovery or a full-time education program.
