Our schools must be safe places to learn. The U.S. Department of Education (Department) administers multiple federal programs designed to improve school safety, address critical areas of need for improving the conditions for learning and school climate, and to improve access to systems of support for schools, such as mental health services, trauma, violence prevention, social emotional and behavioral learning, school climate, and school emergency management planning.
In addition to funding, the Department has placed an emphasis on improving technical assistance to states, districts, and schools for school safety and creating safe learning environments through its technical assistance centers for Readiness and Emergency Management, Safe Supportive Learning Environments, Social and Emotional Learning, Student Success and Academic Enrichment, and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports). Also, the School Safety Final Report submitted by the Federal Commission on School Safety (Commission) in December 2018, provided a set of actionable recommendations to assist state and local education communities in preventing school violence and improving recovery efforts after a violent incident.
State educational agencies (SEAs) and local educational agencies (LEAs) can use federal grant funds to implement programs to address student and school safety. The technical assistance supports listed in this section have produced the following high-quality resources to improve school safety, address critical areas of need for improving the conditions for learning, school climate, and to improve access to systems of care and support for schools, districts, students, families, and school communities.
