Resources for Parents and Families for Remote Learning

This resource collection provides resources for parents and families for developing students' social-emotional and behavioral skills in the home while they engage in remote learning.

  • Supporting Families with PBIS at Home. Families and caregivers should consider using positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) in their homes on a daily basis. It is especially helpful when events disrupt normal routines — events like worldwide health pandemics. This practice brief from the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) TA Center provides recommendations for families and caregivers on how to use PBIS to support students' social and emotional growth and minimize behavioral disruptions in the home.
  • Fact Sheet: Teen Mental Health. The Ohio Statewide Family Engagement Center developed a fact sheet on teen mental health.
  • Strategies for Trauma-Informed Distance Learning. The SEL Center has been very actively engaged in providing supports to States, districts, and schools in navigating the COVID-19 (coronavirus) global pandemic. The center has developed a brief on trauma-informed distance learning, authored by Deputy Director Christina Pate.
  • Resources to Support Youth and Families During the Coronavirus COVID-19 Outbreak. The gov website provides a repository of resources from across government on mental health and coping, particularly for those working with children, youth, and families. It highlights resources on topics affecting youth, including education, and how supportive adults can help.
  • Towards Communities of Care: Facing Death, Dying, and Loss: The Communities of Care Virtual Coffeehouse Series, a project of the Midwest and Plains Equity Assistance Center (EAC Region III), seeks to leverage equity-centered approaches to educational practices and to support learning communities in the wake of COVID-19. In this conversation, participants discuss supporting students and families negotiating death, dying, and loss, as well as how we approach authentically caring for our school communities as an act of teaching and learning.
  • Supporting Emotional Wellness: Coping with Anxiety and Fear During the COVID-19 Pandemic (June 13, 2020). In this ​learning event, Midwest and Plains Equity Assistance Center invites families from different backgrounds to come together to discuss their anxieties and fears related to the pandemic and learn self and community care strategies for promoting emotional wellness in the age of COVID-19. This virtual roundtable is facilitated by Tracy Pruitt, M.Ed., a trained school counselor specializing in parent support around trauma, grief and loss, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and behavioral and anger management.
