Thank you, Ted Mitchell, for that kind introduction and for hosting Diane Jones and me this morning.
I'm really looking forward to our conversation, but before we begin, I want to make one thing clear: I believe American higher education is the envy of the world. Thank you for the contributions you have each made to make it so. But in order to keep it that way, there are a few challenges to address.
Like all of education, higher education is due for a rethink.

ATLANTA I'm pleased to be back at this conference with all of you who work so hard to educate, support, and serve students.
The role you play in their lives is essential. You are there for them as they take steps on their lifelong learning journeys. They might not always say it, but I will: your impact on students is significant. So, let me take this opportunity to thank you.

Thank you, Kyle Kashuv, for that introduction. I was so pleased to meet and visit with you some months ago. The adage of good things coming from bad situations was proven once again. I hope you know just how impressed we are by your courage and your determination to stay engaged.
Many of you know Kyle, and you know what he and his classmates went through in Parkland, Florida. No student, no parent, no teacher should ever have to worry about their safety at school.

I've spent most of my life in the private sector, and I still feel more at home at events like thiswith leaders of industry, creative thinkers, and doers than in the acronym-obsessed halls of Washington, D.C.
