U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King Jr. Announces New Family Ambassador to Support Parent and Family Engagement in Education Policy

September 27, 2016

U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King Jr. today announced the U.S. Department of Education's first Family Ambassador, Frances Frost, to increase parent and family engagement in education policy. The Family Ambassador position is made possible by a grant from the Kellogg Foundation and an agreement with The Campagna Center of Alexandria, Virginia, to support family engagement in education.

"Parents and families should have meaningful opportunities to both contribute to and understand the policies and programs that impact them and their children, schools and communities," said Ann Whalen, senior advisor delegated the duties of assistant secretary of the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education. "The Family Ambassador will help bolster our efforts to ensure that parents and families are meaningfully engaged and represented in every step of their child's education."

Frost will bring the family voice to discussions at a national level and facilitate discussions between the Department, families and family engagement stakeholders that will contribute to solutions at all levels. She will bring to bear her experiences, knowledge and stories of parents, families, schools and communities in order to inform and impact Department policies and improve outcomes for children and their families. She will also communicate with families on behalf of the Department and facilitate the involvement and understanding of parents and families in developing and implementing policies.

Frost is a parent, teacher, coach, author and blogger, and an advocate for equitable and quality education. She volunteers in youth and education related community activities and organizations such as the Maryland PTA, Girls on the Run, the Girl Scouts of America, and is a former president of the Montgomery County Council of PTAs.

More information on the Family Ambassador position and Frances Frost will be available soon on the Family and Community Engagement page.
