U.S. Department of Education Awards More Than $30.8 Million in Grants to Strengthen Math and Science Skills of Upward Bound Students
The U.S. Department of Education awarded 113 grants totaling more than $30.8 million to Upward Bound students to strengthen their math and science skills, and prepare them for postsecondary education programs that lead to careers in the fields of math and science. The goal of the Upward Bound Math-Science program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science, and to pursue postsecondary degrees and careers in these fields.
"Compared to their peers in other countries, our students are stagnating in the STEM fields. We must recruit a new generation of science and technology leaders by investing in youth, particularly those from underrepresented groups," U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said.
Students participating in the Upward Bound Math-Science program have access to summer programs with intensive math and science training; year-round counseling and advisement; exposure to university faculty members who do research in mathematics and the sciences; computer training; and participant-conducted scientific research under the guidance of faculty members or graduate students who are serving as mentors; and education or counseling services designed to improve the financial and economic literacy of students. In addition, students who are disabled; limited English proficient; from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in postsecondary education; homeless, in foster care or aging out of the foster-care system; and other disconnected students are eligible to participate in the Upward Bound Math-Science program.
The Upward Bound Math-Science program is one of three types of programs funded under the Upward Bound program, which is one of seven outreach and student services programs under the TRIO umbrella. The other programs are:
- Educational Opportunity Centers
- Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement
- Student Support Services
- Talent Search
- Training Program for Federal TRIO programs
- Upward Bound
- Veterans Upward Bound
The Upward Bound Math-Science program is administered by the Office of Postsecondary Education. For additional information, visit http://www2.ed.gov/programs/triomathsci/index.html.
