Statement from U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King Jr. on School Shooting in Anderson, South Carolina

September 30, 2016

"I am heartbroken by yesterday's senseless act of violence at an elementary school in Anderson County, South Carolina. America's classrooms should be safe havens of joy and learning for students and teachers alike. And yet time and again we are forced to confront the reality of shattered lives and terrified children and teachers huddling for safety in bathrooms or storage closets. We cannot claim we are living up to our ideals as a nation until we do more to protect our families from the horrors of gun violence. My thoughts and prayers this evening are with the victims and their families as they fight to recover, and the U.S. Department of Education is standing by to help local educators in the difficult days and weeks to come."
