Education Department Awards $4.3 Million in Grants for Fulbright-Hays International Education Programs
The U.S. Department of Education announced the award of 53 grants under two Fulbright-Hays international education programs to a total of 49 institutions and organizations in 24 states and the District of Columbia:
- $1.37 million for 16 new grants to institutions and organizations in 11 states and the District of Columbia for Group Projects Abroad (GPA) Short-Term projects; and
- $2.94 million to 37 institutions of higher education in 23 states and the District of Columbia for Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) projects.
"All students need to develop global competencies to succeed in their careers and communities in the 21st century, and these programs provide critical support to help educators and students develop these skills," said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. "They support a key part of the Obama Administration's efforts to offer our students real experience with the world beyond their bordersexperience with languages, cultures and societies very different from their own."
The GPA Short-Term projects support overseas training, research, and curriculum development in modern foreign languages and area studies for groups of teachers, students, and faculty involved in a common endeavor.
At the 37 institutions receiving DDRA grants, 83 individual fellowships are being awarded to doctoral students to conduct research in modern foreign languages and area studies in other countries for periods of six to twelve months. The goal of the research grants is to deepen knowledge of areas in the world not generally included in U.S. curricula.
These programs are part of the larger Fulbright-Hays Program, which dates to 1961 when the late U.S. Sen. J. William Fulbright sponsored legislation for several programs that aim to increase mutual understanding between the United States and the rest of the world.
This year, to address the Administration's goal of broadening access to international and foreign language education by traditionally underserved students, faculty and institutions, the competition invited applications from Minority-Serving Institutions, community colleges, and other institutions that promote the participation of students from minority and less-advantaged backgrounds. Competitive preference was given to projects that focus on Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, projects that focus on 78 priority languages , and projects that involve K-12 educators as participants.
- In addition to these new grants, the Department also awarded $1.9 million for 11 continuation grants for Group Projects Abroad (GPA) Long-Term projects, which provide advanced intensive language training overseas. Unlike the projects announced today, which hold annual competitions, the GPA Long-Term program is competed every four years.
