U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos to Wrap Up "Rethink School" Tour in New Orleans

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos will wrap up her “Rethink School” tour Friday, Oct. 5, 2018, in New Orleans. House Majority Whip Steve Scalise will join her for Friday’s events.

Secretary DeVos will visit Edward Hynes Charter School to observe its academically rich, innovative programs, read to a group of students and participate in a roundtable discussion. Hynes Charter, which partners with the University of New Orleans College of Education, has maintained an A-rating in Louisiana's school performance scores for several years.

Later that morning, the Secretary will tour New Orleans Military and Maritime Academy and learn more about its Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (JROTC) program and the character development and academic education it provides students.

Secretary DeVos’ four-state tour is challenging local leaders, educators and parents to rethink school. She kicked off the tour on Wednesday, Oct.3, in Atlanta, Georgia, and Huntsville, Alabama, and today, she continued her tour with stops in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and Lexington and Jackson, Mississippi.

In Atlanta, she visited the Georgia Institute of Technology to learn about its innovative student programs and held a roundtable with students there on the newly launched myStudentAid mobile application. In Huntsville, Secretary DeVos toured the Marshall Space Flight Center before visiting the U.S. Space & Rocket Center to observe its hands-on, out-of-the-classroom learning experiences for students. She also delivered remarks on the importance of rethinking education in order to improve outcomes for students.

Today, she visited the RISE Center on the University of Alabama’s campus to observe its blended early childhood education and special education learning environment. She then headed to Shelton State Community College to learn about its unique career and technical education programs, and community partnerships. Later, Secretary DeVos visited Holmes Central High School in Lexington’s Holmes County school district to learn about a program being implemented there and in selected districts throughout the state that provides promising high school students access to advanced courses using blended classes.

This afternoon, she will participate in a learning activity outside the traditional classroom setting with families of home-schooled children in the Jackson, Mississippi, area.
