U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos Continues “Rethink School” Tour in Alabama and Mississippi

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos will travel to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and Lexington and Jackson, Mississippi, to continue her “Rethink School” tour on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018.

On Thursday, Secretary DeVos will visit the RISE Center on the University of Alabama campus in Tuscaloosa to observe its blended early childhood education and special education learning environment. Following the RISE Center visit, she will head to Shelton State Community College to learn more about its unique career and technical education programs, and community partnerships.

Later, the Secretary will travel to a Lexington high school in the Holmes County school district. She will learn about a program being implemented there and in selected districts throughout the state that provides promising high school students access to advanced courses using blended classes with several strategies: in-class instructors, online resources, college student tutors, and residential university camps.

Finally, Secretary DeVos will participate in a learning activity outside the traditional classroom setting with families of home-schooled children in the Jackson, Mississippi, area.

Secretary DeVos kicked off her tour today in Atlanta, Georgia, and Huntsville, Alabama. She visited the Georgia Institute of Technology to learn about its innovative student programs and held a roundtable with students there on the newly launched myStudentAid mobile application. This afternoon in Alabama, Secretary DeVos will tour the Marshall Space Flight Center before visiting the U.S. Space & Rocket Center to observe its hands-on, out-of-the-classroom learning experiences for students. She also will deliver remarks on the importance of rethinking education in order to improve outcomes for students.
