U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education Cindy Marten to Visit Schools in Upper Darby and William Penn Districts to Highlight Innovative Pandemic Recovery Efforts

On Monday, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education Cindy Marten will visit suburban Philadelphia's Upper Darby and William Penn school districts to learn firsthand how these communities are using federal American Rescue Plan (ARP) Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) investments to support students' learning and social, emotional, and mental health recovery from the pandemic.

The visits are the first stops on Deputy Secretary Marten's three-day tour of multiple schools to highlight their promising practices using ARP funds. She will first visit Upper Darby's Bywood Elementary School where she'll tour classrooms and observe a 5th-grade teacher's professional development activity that utilizes trauma-informed strategies. Next, Deputy Secretary Marten will travel to Garretford Elementary School, where she'll participate in a roundtable discussion with elementary and middle school parents.

Later, Deputy Secretary Marten will visit William Penn School District to learn about the district's plans for ARP-funded summer enrichment programs, beginning at Evans Elementary School for a roundtable discussion with students and parents.

Since President Biden signed the American Rescue Plan into law one year ago, which included $130 billion to support recovery efforts at K-12 schools, more than 99% of elementary and secondary school students have returned to classrooms for in-person learning. Deputy Secretary Marten will also visit schools in Princeton and Newark, New Jersey, on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Each stop will end with a press gaggle. Press interested in covering each event can RSVP to press@ed.gov.
