U.S. Department of Education Assistant Secretary Thelma Meléndez de Santa Ana will discuss the importance of early learning and literacy instruction at the opening session of the 2010 Reading Institute in Anaheim, Calif., on Monday, July 19. This year, the U. S. Department of Education is joining with the National Institute for Literacy and the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services to offer an Early Learning and Development strand at the Institute, which will focus on children from birth to third grade. More information, including the Reading Institute agenda, is available at http://www.mikogroup.com/2010earlylearningdevelopmentstrand/

“Research shows that learning begins at birth and that high-quality early learning programs help children succeed in school and in life,” Secretary Arne Duncan said. “We are committed to helping children learn to read and preparing them for college and career success. The Reading Institute demonstrates that commitment.”

The Reading Institute, July 19-21, is designed to expand and enrich the knowledge base and professional expertise of reading professionals and educational leaders. This year’s Institute will focus on effective teaching and learning from birth through adolescence, including the topics of comprehension and vocabulary, as well as other essential elements of teaching and learning to read. The Institute will showcase presenters with national expertise in reading instruction, as well as state and local leaders who are developing comprehensive reading initiatives.
