U.S. Department of Education Assistant Secretary Frank Brogan To Visit Mississippi as Part of 2019 National Back-to-School Tour

Will Discuss Family and Youth Homelessness, Education Freedom Scholarships

The U.S.Department of Education’s Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education Frank Brogan will travel to Gulfport, Jackson and Ridgeland on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 19-20, as part of U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos’ 2019 Back-to-School tour. He will meet with community leaders to discuss their efforts to combat homelessness and how this Administration can support those efforts. He also will visit two schools to meet with school officials and students, and to discuss education options through the Secretary’s Education Freedom Scholarship proposal.

On Thursday afternoon, Brogan, chairman of the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, will sit down with Open Doors Homeless Coalition Executive Director and CEO Mary Simon, Gulfport Chief of Police Leonard Papania, the Ending Youth Homelessness Team, the Youth and Young Adult Action Board and other supporters of the Open Doors Homeless Coalition. He will hear about their efforts to reduce family and youth homelessness. After the meeting, Brogan will then head to Gulfport High School, which serves a homeless population. He will tour the school and meet with school officials and students.

On Friday morning, Brogan will visit Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Jefferson Davis campus to learn about the college’s Collegiate Academy that offers dual enrollment and career and technical education certification programs. Students at this innovative high school can begin taking college-level classes during their junior year. Brogan will hear from students who are earning an industry certification and a high school diploma at the same time. He will be joined by Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College President Mary S. Graham and Gulfport School District Superintendent Glen East.

Later, Brogan will visit Jackson Academy in Jackson to tour the school and learn about its distinctive programs in technology, communications and the arts; meet with students and school officials, including Head of School Jack Milne; and discuss Education Freedom Scholarships.

Brogan’s final stop will be at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School where he will be joined by Head of School Tom Sheppard. He will visit classrooms where students are learning advanced math and science, and using innovative, research-based technologies.
