U.S. Department of Education and Women's Sports Foundation to Host 'Title IX 50th Anniversary Field Day' to Commemorate the Successes of the Landmark Law

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the signing of Title IX, the U.S. Department of Education and the Women's Sports Foundation (WSF) will host a 'Title IX 50th Anniversary Field Day' for Washington D.C. and Baltimore-area students (ages 8 – 14 years old) to get active, try new sports, hear from champion athletes and leaders, and learn how Title IX impacts their lives. This Field Day is designed to inspire, educate and empower athletes of today to advocate for the access and opportunities Title IX can and should provide.

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona and WSF CEO Danette Leighton will give opening remarks. Next an athlete panel moderated by three-time Ice Hockey Olympic medalist Meghan Duggan, will feature U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education Cindy Marten, 29-time Paralympic swimming medalist Jessica Long and the most decorated Black athlete in Winter Olympics history Elana Meyers Taylor.

Following the program, students from schools around the Washington D.C. and Baltimore area will participate in various stations involving STEM and sports activities.

The event will conclude with closing remarks from U.S. Assistant Secretary for the Office for Civil Rights Catherine E. Lhamon.
