U.S. Assistant Secretary of Education Thelma Melendez and Juan Sepulveda, executive director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans, will be panelists at events at the annual conference of the National Council of La Raza in San Antonio, Texas.

On Saturday, July, 10, Melendez will participate in the “Town Hall: Educating Our Way Out of the Economic Crisis: Everyone College-Ready.” Melendez will be joining several other prominent speakers, including Ricardo Romo, president of The University of Texas at San Antonio; Daniel King, superintendent, Pharr San Juan Alamo ISD; Michael Lomax, president, United Negro College Fund; and Raymund Paredes, commissioner, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The panelists will focus on the achievement gap that exists, particularly among Latino, African American, and white students, the corresponding gap in college access, and the economic implications of that gap.

On Monday, July 12, Melendez will be joined by Sepulveda, as they participate in a roundtable discussion titled “Starting a Conversation About the Cultural Norms and Our Children’s Health and Wellness.” The discussion will focus on various issues affecting Latino students, such as the academic achievement gap, dropout and retention rates, college access, and how innovative, federal-wide collaborations can help improve their education and general well-being.

The conference will be held at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio. The National Council of La Raza is the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S., and works to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans.
