U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will address a joint meeting of the Council of Chief State School Officers and the State Higher Education Executive Officers Friday in Minneapolis, the first time the two organizations have met. The 2010 Conference and Summer Institute will bring together top state education officials from across the country.
Duncan will urge K-12 and higher education leaders to work together to improve high school and college graduation rates and to focus on achieving President Obama’s goal that America once again will lead the world in college completion by the end of the decade.
Also attending will be Under Secretary Martha Kanter and Assistant Secretaries Thelma Melendez and Alexa Posny. Melendez heads the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, while Posny leads the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services.
