Secretary DeVos to Visit Houston Area to Learn About Local, Innovative Workforce Development Efforts to Narrow the Skills Gap

Visit will highlight education pathways to success for students through programs at S&B Engineers and Constructors, Johnson Space Center

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos will be in the Houston area on Wednesday, June 5, to see how local education leaders and employers are narrowing the skills gap between workers and in-demand jobs.

First, the Secretary will tour S&B Engineers and Constructors’ Craft Education and Skills Enhancement Center in Baytown, Texas, and will meet with current students and graduates of S&B’s 17-week, earn-while-you-learn apprenticeship program. The program trains veterans to become welders and pipefitters to help fill high-demand, high-skilled industrial construction jobs in the greater Houston area.

Afterwards, the Secretary will visit NASA’s Johnson Space Center to meet with NASA leadership and will have the opportunity to speak with two astronauts aboard the International Space Station via video from Mission Control. Media will be invited to cover the Secretary as she meets with NASA interns to learn more about their goals for careers in aeronautics, engineering, science and mission support disciplines, and tour the Space Vehicle Mockup Facility where astronauts undergo training.
