Secretary DeVos to Visit Great Lakes Maritime Academy During Back To School Tour

Visit Will Highlight Innovative Career Training Programs

On Thursday, Sep. 19, 2019, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos will tour the Great Lakes Maritime Academy in Traverse City, Michigan. This visit is part of the Secretary’s Back To School Tour, which will promote education freedom, college and career readiness, and opening up multiple pathways to success for American students.

Great Lakes Maritime Academy, part of Northwestern Michigan College, was selected for this tour because of its career training programs that prepare students for jobs in in-demand fields. The Secretary will visit hands-on learning environments where students engage with seamanship, navigation, piloting, and more. Members of the media will have the opportunity to ask questions of Secretary DeVos during a brief media availability following the tour.

This is the third year Secretary DeVos has embarked on a Back-to-School Tour to highlight learning environments where local educators and elected leaders are rethinking education. This year’s tour will focus specifically on how the Secretary’s Education Freedom Scholarships proposal, introduced in both the House and Senate, will help supplement local efforts to rethink school and expand education options for students in states across the country. To learn more about the Education Freedom Scholarships proposal, visit www.ed.gov/freedom
