Secretary DeVos to Visit Detroit Edison Public School Academy

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos will visit Detroit Edison Public School Academy (DEPSA) on Friday, Sep. 20, 2019, as part of her Back To School Tour. DEPSA, a public charter school, works closely with students and parents to increase academic achievement.

DEPSA serves students from pre-K through high school, and it boasts a rigorous college preparatory curriculum while also preparing students for multiple pathways to success. Sec. DeVos will visit classrooms to engage with students and teachers as they participate in learning activities. Members of the media will be able to observe the tour, and a press avail will be held at the conclusion of the visit.

The need to rethink education in Detroit is clear, as the city is the lowest-performing urban area studied in the Nation's Report Card. Though all Detroit schools struggle to meet their achievement targets, low-income 3rd grade students attending public charter schools are reaching English Language Arts proficiency at a rate nearly double — more than nine points higher than — their peers in traditional public schools. Out of all open-enrollment high schools in Detroit, the top 12 whose students attained the highest average SAT scores are all public charter schools. DEPSA students, on average, are achieving the highest SAT scores of all open-enrollment schools in Detroit. Further, a major Stanford study found that Detroit public charter students gain the equivalent of several months of extra education versus their traditional public school peers. Importantly, Detroit's traditional public school students showed growth this year across all tested subjects, though overall proficiency rates remain in the low teens.

This is the third year Secretary DeVos has embarked on a Back-to-School Tour to highlight learning environments where local educators and elected leaders are rethinking education. This year's tour will focus specifically on how the Secretary's Education Freedom Scholarships proposal, introduced in both the House and Senate, will help supplement local efforts to rethink school and expand education options for students in states across the country.
