Secretary DeVos to Observe Career and Technical Education Opportunities for Alaskan Students with Education Commissioner Michael Johnson

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos will visit both Anchorage and Nome, Alaska, with Alaska Education Commissioner Michael Johnson to learn more about the career and technical education (CTE) options available to students in the state.

The first stop will take place in Anchorage at King Tech High School, where students have access to CTE programs in 25 different occupations that prepare them for both career and college. According to the school, King Tech students learn what is expected of them in the workplace, how to create a career portfolio and the skills necessary to apply and interview for a job. They are required to complete an internship before graduation.

Next, Secretary DeVos and Commissioner Johnson will visit with students at Nome-Beltz Jr./Sr. High School in Nome and tour Northwestern Alaska Career & Technical Center (NACTEC), which shares a campus with the high school. Students from around the region can take classes at NACTEC where the curriculum is focused on career and technical skills, career exploration, life skills and workforce preparedness.
