Secretary Cardona to Join Jazz Artist Terell Stafford and Local Students for “Jazz Informance”

On Tuesday, April 4, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona, in conjunction with the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz (Institute), will join a Jazz Informance—a combination of performance with educational information. This event will feature four of the country’s most gifted high school music students, internationally acclaimed jazz trumpet recording artist Terell Stafford, and a renowned jazz educator from the Institute Dr. JB Dyas. Also, Secretary Cardona and Deputy General Counsel Phil Rosenfelt will provide remarks.

In addition to great jazz, the Informance will focus on what jazz is, why it is so important to America, the democratic values that jazz represents, and how students and teachers are Raising the Bar in music.

The event will be livestreamed at this link. Closed captioning and ASL interpretation will be provided.

Arts education is a key element of the Department’s priority to support students through pandemic recovery. The event is part of the Institute’s national Peer-to-Peer Education Program, which enables gifted student musicians to participate in weeklong tours for their peers in other cities, alongside guest performers.
