Secretary Cardona to Celebrate Teachers, Host Roundtable Discussion About Public Service Loan Forgiveness
In recognition of Teacher Appreciation Week (May 2-6), U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona will host a roundtable discussion on Thursday, May 5, with educators who have received complete or partial relief through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF).
Last October, the Department announced a limited PSLF waiver opportunity, which temporarily waives certain program rules to better deliver on the PSLF promise to public service employees with federal student loans. To date, the Department has approved approximately $6.8 billion in discharges for more than 113,000 borrowers through the limited PSLF waiver, with an average discharge balance of close to $60,000 per borrower. While more than 113,000 borrowers have been approved for loan forgiveness, many others have seen increases in their progress toward loan forgiveness through updated payment counts.
Educators joining the Secretary for the roundtable include union members from the American Federation of Teachers and National Education Association.
The roundtable discussion will take place at the Department. A press gaggle will follow.
