Secretary Cardona and North Carolina Rep. Alma Adams Highlight Support for HBCUs, Summer Enrichment with Visits to Johnson C. Smith University and Paw Creek Elementary School

EVENT DATE: Monday, July 12, 2021

On Monday, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona and U.S. Rep. Alma Adams of North Carolina will visit Johnson C. Smith University, tour the university’s Science Center, and participate in a roundtable discussion with students and education leaders. Secretary Cardona will discuss the Build Back Better agenda, a once-in-a-generation investment in our nation’s future that includes $45 billion in investments for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), including Johnson C. Smith University. The roundtable will be followed by a brief press gaggle with Secretary Cardona and Rep. Adams.

Secretary Cardona and Rep. Adams also will visit Paw Creek Elementary School after school hours, where they will tour a Camp CMS program and learn about types of instruction offered to students with exceptional needs. Camp CMS, led by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, is a free, full-day summer experience for K-12 students with in-person learning. After the tour, Secretary Cardona and Rep. Adams will speak with parents of students with exceptional needs and discuss how to best support children with disabilities. This visit coincides with National Summer Learning Week, where Secretary Cardona is highlighting the importance of reengaging students and building excitement around returning to in-person learning this fall. The roundtable will be followed by a brief press gaggle with Secretary Cardona and Rep. Adams.

Press access to the tours and roundtables is limited. Certain events will be pooled press. If you are interested in covering these events, please email press@ed.gov.
