Secretary Cardona and Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to Commemorate 20th Anniversary of Proposition 49 and Highlight High-Quality After-School Education Programs in Los Angeles
On Wednesday, Nov. 16, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona will travel to Los Angeles, California, where he will join former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Proposition 49: the After-School Education and Safety Act and celebrate the Engage Every Student Initiative. The Initiative will help communities utilize American Rescue Plan funds alongside other state and local funds to ensure that every child who wants a spot in a high-quality out-of-school time (OST) program has one. Proposition 49, which passed in 2002 and was implemented in 2006, dedicated an estimated $6.77 billion dollars to support school-based expanded learning programs across the state of California.
Secretary Cardona and Gov. Schwarzenegger will head to Bell Gardens Intermediate School where they will speak to students about the importance of after school learning. Afterwards, they will tour an After-School All-Stars after-school program.
Press are invited to join the remarks and a brief tour of the school’s after-school programming. Secretary Cardona and Gov. Schwarzenegger will also hold a press gaggle following their remarks.
