Events Part of National Back to School Tour, Spotlighting Education Freedom Choices

Assistant U.S. Secretary of Education Scott Stump will visit BridgeValley Community and Technical College, George Washington High School and Saint Albans High School in the greater Charleston, W.Va., area Thursday and Friday as part of the U.S. Department of Education’s 2019 National Back to School Tour.

At 2 p.m. Thursday, Stump will visit BridgeValley Community and Technical College in South Charleston. He will see students participating in the nursing program and Advanced Technology Center. BridgeValley offers multiple pathways to achieving a meaningful career. It has more than 40 associate degree and 20 certification programs. Students can choose from a range of courses, including accounting, manufacturing, engineering, cyber security, diesel technology, electrical engineering, finance and health sciences.

On Friday, Stump will visit from 9 to 10:30 a.m. George Washington High School in Charleston. He will learn about a state-of-the-art coding project. The school was ranked as the best high school in West Virginia in 2019, offering numerous advance placement courses. It’s also among the top 250 STEM schools in the nation. It operates a program known as “GW S.T.E.A.M.,” which includes science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. A press availability will be held at 10:30 a.m.

From there, Stump will conclude his trip with a visit from 12:30 to 2 p.m. to Saint Albans Public High School in Saint Albans, W.Va. He will meet with students there who are also studying in the STEAM fields. 

Stump is one of several top Education Department officials crisscrossing the nation this week as part of the Department’s annual National Back to School Tour – spotlighting schools that are rethinking education.
