Secretary Cardona to Travel to Southern California

Cardona to discuss strategies to lift up the teaching profession in San Diego, join Rep. Sánchez and Rep. Torres to highlight pandemic recovery efforts and workforce preparation programs

From Monday through Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona will travel to Southern California. During his trip he will speak at the Carnegie Foundation's Summit on Improvement in Education, where he will discuss strategies to support students and educators through pandemic recovery and reimagining education. Secretary Cardona will also tour several schools and colleges throughout Southern California. On these tours, Secretary Cardona will speak with students and school leaders about ongoing efforts to ensure students recover from the pandemic and connect to high-quality workforce opportunities.

On Monday, Secretary Cardona will participate in a fireside chat at the Summit on Improvement in Education in San Diego, Calif. which will be moderated by Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching President Timothy Knowles.

Secretary Cardona will then travel on Tuesday to Río Hondo College in Whittier, Calif. with U.S. Rep. Linda Sánchez. There, they will participate in a conversation with students about school-based supports that help to meet students’ basic needs such as housing and food security. Río Hondo College was recently awarded a grant under the Basic Needs for Postsecondary Students Program which supports programs that address the basic needs of students and elevate practices that improve student outcomes.

Secretary Cardona will then join U.S. Rep. Sánchez and California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond for a student-led tour of El Rancho High School.  They will be welcomed by the school’s marching band, then visit several classes to learn about the school’s Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) program. They will also learn how student and staff COVID-19 testing clinics have helped to mitigate the spread of the virus. Following the tour, Secretary Cardona, U.S. Rep. Sánchez and Superintendent Thurmond will participate in a brief press gaggle.

Afterwards, Secretary Cardona will visit De Anza Middle School in Ontario, Calif. with U.S. Rep. Norma Torres for a tour of the school including the Wellness, Arts and Technology Center. During the visit they will learn how De Anza is utilizing pandemic relief funds to expand instructional time and offer additional academic enrichment opportunities for students through health and wellness programs, Mandarin, Arabic and Spanish language courses, high school credit programs and coding/robotics offerings. These programs will extend the school day and provide summer offerings to help students recover from the pandemic while increasing academic achievement and social and emotional supports.

Secretary Cardona, U.S. Rep. Torres and Superintendent Thurmond will then visit the Chaffey College Industrial Technical Learning Center (InTech) for a tour and roundtable with graduates and school leaders. InTech Center – the result of a public-private partnership between Chaffey Community College and California Steel Industries – offers training, certificate, and apprenticeship programs in high-demand, high-quality careers. Following the roundtable, Secretary Cardona, U.S. Rep. Torres and State Superintendent Thurmond will participate in a brief press gaggle.

On Wednesday, Secretary Cardona will travel to Los Angeles to visit with students and families from L.A. Unified School District. More details about that visit will be released soon.

Please RSVP by emailing press@ed.gov to secure your spot and to receive detailed access directions. Members of the press will be required to adhere to campus and school mask-wearing policies during each event.
