The purpose of the Rehabilitation Long-Term Training program (RLTT) is to provide academic training that leads to an academic degree or academic certificate in areas of personnel shortages identified by the Secretary and published in a notice in the Federal Register. 

Awards can be made in any of 30 RLTT fields for: 

  1. Projects that provide basic or advanced training leading to an academic degree in one of those fields of study listed in 34 CFR § 386.1(b) and identified by the Secretary; 
  2. Projects that provide a specified series of courses or program of study leading to the award of a certificate in one of those fields of study; and
  3. Projects that provide support for medical residents enrolled in residency training programs in the specialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation.

The funds are awarded to colleges and universities that in turn award scholarships to students enrolled in rehabilitation training programs.

States or public or private nonprofit agencies or organizations, including Indian Tribes and institutions of higher education are eligible for RLTT funding.
