The purpose of the Native American and Alaska Native children in School (NAM) program is to award grants to eligible entities to develop and enhance capacity to provide effective instruction and support to Native American students who are identified as English learners (ELs). The goal of this program is to support the teaching, learning and studying of Native American languages while also increasing the English language proficiency of students served to achieve the same challenging State academic content and achievement standards for all students.
*Note: The term Native American language means the historical, traditional languages spoken by Native Americans, consistent with section 103 of the Native American Languages Act (25 U.S.C. 2902).
Projects may include teacher training, curriculum development, and evaluation and assessment to support the core program of student instruction and parent-community participation. Student instruction may comprise preschool, elementary, secondary, and postsecondary levels or combinations of these levels.
Who May Apply:
Entities that operate the following kinds of elementary, secondary, and postsecondary schools primarily for Native American children (including Alaska Native children), are eligible applicants under this program:
- Indian tribes
- Tribally sanctioned educational authorities
- Native Hawaiian or Native American Pacific Islander native language educational organizations
- Elementary schools or secondary schools that are operated or funded by the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE), or a consortium of such schools
- Elementary schools or secondary schools operated under a contract with or grant from the BIE in consortium with another such school or a tribal or community organization
- Elementary schools or secondary schools operated by the Bureau of Indian Education and an IHE, in consortium with an elementary school or secondary school operated under a contract with or a grant from the Bureau of Indian Education or a Tribal or community organization
Note: Note: Under section 3112(c) of the ESEA, EL students served under NAM grants must not be included in the child count submitted by a school district under ESEA section 3114(a) for purposes of receiving funding under the English Language Acquisition State Grants program.

Timeline for Competition

Applicants are strongly encouraged to notify us of their intent to submit an application for funding by emailing NAM2016@ed.gov with the subject line “Intent to Apply” and include in the content of the email the following information: (1) the applicant organization’s name and address, and (2) any competitive preference priority and invitational priority the applicant is addressing in the application. - Deadline for Transmittal of Applications: May 24, 2016 at 4:30:00 pm (EDT)

INSTRUCTIONS FOR GRANT PERFORMANCE REPORT
Recipients of multi-year discretionary grants must submit an annual performance report for each year funding has been approved in order to receive a continuation award. The annual performance report should demonstrate whether substantial progress has been made toward meeting the project objectives and the program performance measures.
FORMS TO COMPLETE GRANT PERFORMANCE REPORT (ED 524B)
You must submit the ED 524B Cover sheet, Executive Summary, and the Project Status Chart. You may reference sections and page numbers of your approved application rather than repeating information.
