U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today announced that Tennessee will receive $67.8 million to turn around its persistently lowest achieving schools through the School Improvement Grants (SIG) program. These funds are part of the $3.5 billion that will be made available to states this spring from money set aside in the 2009 budget and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

I am delighted to be here today and to participate in this conference. There is so much that the United States has to learn from nations with high-performing education systems. And there is much that America can share from its experience to the mutual benefit of nations confronting similar educational challenges.

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan today issued the following statement on the release of Education at a Glance by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development:
“Education at a Glance affirms that the United States is headed in the right direction to meet President Obama’s goal of regaining the lead in college completion by the end of the decade. The United States moved from 12th in the world in 2007 in the percentage of young adults with a college degree to tied for ninth in the world in 2008. But we have a lot more work to do to get there.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today recognized 304 schools as 2010 National Blue Ribbon Schools. Secretary Duncan was joined by Washington, D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, D.C. Public Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee and George Washington University Provost Steven Lerman for the announcement at School Without Walls Senior High School, a 2010 Blue Ribbon School in Washington, D.C.
