The U.S. Education Department has awarded seven colleges $250,000 each to operate Veterans Upward Bound programs that help veterans develop academic and other skills needed to succeed in postsecondary education. The primary goal of the program is to increase the rate of enrollment and completion of postsecondary education programs.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced today that 32 colleges and universities have been awarded $6.3 million in grants to help underrepresented students earn doctoral degrees, strengthen science and engineering education, and better prepare students for careers in science and technology.

More than 150 college and graduate students have answered President Obama's call to service while interning at the U.S. Department of Education this summer. The 158 interns are from 93 different colleges and universities and are working in 21 different offices throughout the Education Department.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today announced that four companies were awarded contracts to service a portion of the approximately $550 billion outstanding federal student loan portfolio held by the Department. The selected contractors will also service loans originated by and sold to the Department in the future.
