Adult Education and Literacy

The Division of Adult Education and Literacy (DAEL) administers adult education and literacy programs that help adults acquire the basic skills they need including reading, writing, math, English language proficiency, and problem-solving to be productive workers, family members, and citizens. The Office of Correctional Education is also located in DAEL.

DAEL's responsibilities include:

  • Administering the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act (AEFLA) formula grant program to States (Title II of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA));
  • Providing assistance to States to improve program quality, accountability and capacity; and
  • Establishing national leadership activities to enhance the quality of adult education.
