U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights Solicits Public Input on Civil Rights Data Collection for 2025-26 and 2027-28 School Years

Information Collection Request includes collecting additional data items for the 2025-26 and 2027-28 Civil Rights Data Collection

The U.S. Department of Education's (Department) Office for Civil Rights (OCR) today submitted a proposed Civil Rights Data Collection (CRDC) Information Collection Request for the 2025-26 and 2027-28 school years to the Federal Register for public comment.

The Department has collected civil rights data since 1968. The CRDC collects data and information about student access to educational opportunity and resources including courses and school staff, as well as school climate factors, such as the use of student discipline and allegations of student harassment, from public schools serving students in preschool to grade 12.

"The Civil Rights Data Collection provides crucial information for evaluating students' experiences in America's public schools," said Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Catherine E. Lhamon. "We look forward to receiving and reviewing public comments on the proposed data elements and to working with schools and districts to collect these essential data."

Today's Information Collection Request includes collecting additional data items for the 2025-26 and 2027-28 CRDC. These data include:

· Informal removals of students from education programs.

· The experiences of students placed by their school districts in private schools, including whether such students are subjected to restraint or seclusion in those private schools.

· The presence of threat assessment teams in schools.

The CRDC is a valuable resource for all those who use data to better inform decisions concerning student equity and opportunity. For background information and FAQs regarding the CRDC, please visit: Frequently Asked Questions.

Members of the public may review the proposed 2025-26 and 2027-28 school years data elements here. An official copy of the Federal Register notice will be posted on www.federalregister.com by Oct. 18, 2024.
