On Thursday, September 15, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona alongside Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff will continue the Road to Success Back to School Bus Tour in Pennsylvania. The week-long, multi-state road trip will showcase the many ways school communities are helping students recover and thrive — putting them on the road to success.
First, Secretary Cardona will go to Reading Area Community College to tour the facility and speak to students about ways the school has been able to meet their basic needs throughout the pandemic. There will also be an event to kick off the start of Hispanic Heritage Month.
Afterwards, Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff will join the bus tour as they head to Allentown, PA to hear how the community school provides wraparound services to students in the area. Finally, they will head to Philadelphia to join AFT and other local unions to encourage members to sign up for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. After they depart, union members will continue the PSLF clinic, helping members fill out their applications.
The Road to Success Bus Tour featured stops in Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia and will continue to West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Throughout the week, Secretary Cardona, Deputy Secretary Cindy Marten, and local school leaders will join students, parents, and educators for additional events that celebrate the back-to-school season and underscore the Administration’s commitment to helping students recover from the impacts of the pandemic and continue the road to success. As part of the Road to Success Bus Tour, Administration leaders will highlight academic and mental health programs and efforts to recruit and support educators funded by President Biden’s American Rescue Plan, which provided historic resources to K-12 schools, colleges, and universities to reopen schools and help students of all ages recover.
