This weekend, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona will travel to Los Angeles where he will participate in the 2023 College Football Playoff Foundation’s Extra Yard for Teachers Summit as well as a variety of other events to celebrate the efforts of educators this past year.

On Saturday, Secretary Cardona will administer the oath of office to Tony Thurmond, who was elected to serve a second term as California’s 28th State Superintendent of Public Instruction, in a ceremony in Los Angeles. Afterwards, Secretary Cardona will participate in a town hall with teachers, hosted by the College Football Playoff Foundation’s Extra Yard for Teachers. On Monday, Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff will join Secretary Cardona for a tour of the Roybal Film and Television Production Magnet School, located on the Edward R. Roybal Learning Complex in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) to learn more about teacher support programs and their career and technical programs. Actors and Roybal advisory board members George Clooney, Mindy Kaling, Don Cheadle, and others, along with LAUSD Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho, will join the tour and share more about the unique school programming.

Afterwards, there will be a pool spray where Superintendent Carvalho, Second Gentleman Emhoff, and Secretary Cardona will give brief remarks before their private meeting.
