On Thursday, May 4, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona will travel to Miami, Florida, with Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson where they will visit a technical high school and then discuss the importance of mentoring and after-school programming in assisting student recovery from the pandemic.
First, they will head to William H. Turner Technical Arts High School to tour their medical, construction, and agricultural magnet programs. The tour will be led by students of the program. Afterwards, they will visit Dr. Frederica S. Wilson/Skyway Elementary for a roundtable conversation with principals, after-school programming leaders, and Miami-Dade County School Board members to share ways the third-largest school district in the country has increased after-school programming to encourage academic recovery and mental health support.
A press gaggle will take place following the roundtable discussion.
This trip comes on the heels of Secretary Cardona’s recent major address, “Raise the Bar: Lead the World,” where he laid out his continued priorities to promote academic excellence and prepare for global competitiveness, and the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to ensuring states, school districts, and schools have the support they need to prepare students for the 21st century global economy.
