This week, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona will travel to Louisiana with U.S. Rep. Troy Carter to highlight key education provisions within President Biden’s Build Back Better framework and discuss how students can recover from the impact of COVID on their academic wellbeing and mental health.

On Thursday, Secretary Cardona will tour McKinley Middle Magnet School and participate in a conversation with parents about social and emotional learning and how schools can create opportunities to build life skills. Afterwards, he will tour Glen Oaks High School where he will speak with students about how President Biden’s Build Back Better framework provides students with pathways to affordable higher education.

On Friday, Secretary Cardona and Congressman Carter will be joined by New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell where they will engage with students from Wilcox's Academy Early Learning Center during their holiday party. Afterwards, they will participate in a conversation with parents about the impact the pandemic has had on their children’s learning and how the American Rescue Plan has provided resources for schools to invest in strategies to help students catch up.

Both days will include a press gaggle. Each event will require every attendee and reporter to wear a mask at all times.
