IES provides national leadership in expanding fundamental knowledge and understanding of education from early childhood through postsecondary study, in order to provide parents, educators, students, researchers, policymakers, and the general public with reliable information about educational practices that support learning and improve academic achievement.
IES conducts research, evaluation, and dissemination activities in areas of demonstrated national need, compiles statistics, and develops products.

NCES is the primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing data related to education in the United States and other nations.
National Center for Education Evaluation and Regional Assistance
Conduct evaluations of Federal education programs administered by the Secretary to determine the impact of such programs.
National Center for Special Education Research
Sponsor research to expand knowledge of the needs of infants, toddlers, and children with disabilities in order to improve results.
National Board for Education Sciences
The National Board for Education Sciences advises and consults with the Director on the policies of the Institute and approves priorities.
