Formative and summative grading is the core of these systems

This process of assessment, data analysis, and communication can take place as a formative process of providing descriptive feedback to students that is focused on improvement. It can also take place as a summative process of grading or otherwise categorizing a student and reporting the results to students, parents, colleges, etc.
