The slide shows a graphic organizer that will help students understand the meanings of new vocabulary words. The slide looks like a semantic web and is based on the same idea. The slide provides a way for students to group vocabulary words that are related to each other in some way. In the middle of the graphic organizer is a rectangle. Six lines radiate out from the center rectangle, each line connects to a new rectangle. The six new rectangles are evenly spaced around the center rectangle.
Students record a concept or idea in the center rectangle. The concept is the way that all of the words are related. The student then records a related vocabulary word in each of the six rectangles. For example, if the vocabulary words are life cycle, learned behaviors, inherited behaviors, birth, reproduction, physical features, student would write life cycle in the center rectangle and the remaining words in the surrounding rectangles.
