Explanation of slide: Shows the changes in grade 5 end-of-grade reading test scores in Charlotte, NC for black student and white students from 1997 until 2001. The 1997 scores for black students was 43% and 82% for whites. In 2001 the black students were scoring at 70% and white students at 94%; a 27% gain for blacks, 12% gain for whites and the gap in achievement closed from 39% to 24%.
