Explanation of slide: This slide shows a comparison of National Assessment for Education Progress (NAEP) 4th grade reading scores for 2002 - by family income. Students from poor families scored 54% below basic, 30% basic, and 17% proficient or advanced; while children from non-poor families scored 23% below basic; 35% basic and 42% proficient or advanced.
