Highly Qualified Teachers: Why?

Math and Reading Gain Scores in Boston

This slide contains a bar chart of Average Student Growth Over One Year (percent). In Math, students with the least effective teachers grew -0.6%, while students with the most effective teachers grew 14.6%. In Reading, students with the least effective teachers grew 0.3%, while students with the most effective teachers grew 5.6%.

Explanation of slide: Another study in Boston shows math gains of 14.6% in one year for students assigned to effective teachers and a -0.6% decline in math achievement for students assigned to ineffective teachers. For these same elementary age students, reading score increased by 5.6% for students assigned to effective teachers and a 0.3% fain for students assigned to ineffective teachers.
