Long-Term Training Projects
Rehabilitation of Individuals Who Are Blind or Have Vision Impairments

These grants help colleges and universities provide scholarships to students interested in pursuing careers in providing specialized services to persons who are blind or visually impaired. Graduates of orientation and mobility (O&M) training programs provide training to blind and visually impaired individuals in methods of independent and safe travel. Duties might include interviewing, assessment, referrals and providing direct O&M services. Some opportunities are available in low vision clinics where graduates assess vision and determine training needs. Rehabilitation teachers perform a wide variety of duties including individual assessment, teaching of independent living skills, activities of daily living, homemaking skills, and personnel management. Rehabilitation counselors for the blind perform a variety of duties in providing services to the blind and visually impaired (see rehabilitation counseling).
