Bibliographies
To support the President's Executive Order #13336 on Indian Education
signed April 30, 2004, the Office of Indian Education (OIE) is working to assist American Indian and Alaskan Native students in meeting the academic standards of the No Child Left Behind Act "in a manner that is consistent with tribal traditions, languages, and cultures."
To accomplish this, the OIE conducted a series of four roundtable discussions
and held the first National
Conference on Indian Education
in April of 2005, with the objective of identifying high-priority research topics. From these meetings, hundreds of unique suggestions and ideas were generated, each of which were organized and combined to find common themes. The four topic areas that emerged were: (1) Traditions, Language and Culture, (2) Early Childhood Education, (3) Teacher Training and Development, and (4) College Preparation.
For each of the four identified topic areas, bibliographies have been created to facilitate those interested in American Indian and Alaskan Native education with an overview of the existing literature and research as well as access to articles, chapters and reports.
In identifying research to include in the bibliographies, priority was given to studies that were experimental or quasi-experimental in nature. Because of the limited numbers in this classification, non-experimental, comparative studies were included.
