Slide 7 Bachelor's Degrees ConferredSpeaker's notes explaining graph: While levels of achievement in science among U.S. students are low, the demand for a scientifically proficient workforce is increasing. The United States cannot fill all the jobs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics with qualified U.S. citizens. As a result, Congress has been forced in recent years to provide an expanded pool of visas for foreign nationals with high-tech skills. At the same time, the number of college degrees awarded in technical areas has been dropping for United States citizens. This slide shows relatively low levels of undergraduate degrees in the life and physical sciences being awarded, and a decrease since 1995. U.S. Department of Education.
