Speaker's notes:

The United States faces two serious problems in science education. The first is the overall level of science literacy among our K-12 students. The second is the supply of students preparing for careers in science. Both are low. These problems are laid at the door of our K-12 education system. This is not entirely fair because forces outside the school house are at work on academic achievement and career choice. However, schooling is a powerful influence and the point at which society has greatest leverage on these problems. Reflecting this, the No Child Left Behind Act holds schools accountable for doing a better job in science education. What can research on science education tell educators and policy makers?
