The district also administers its own performance assessments in social studies, foreign languages, English, science, dance, visual arts, and theater arts

Comment: Regents examinations at these grade levels are used to determine student proficiency in the indicated subject areas, and include a mix of open-ended and multiple-choice questions. Scores on Regents examinations are used for awarding a Regents diploma (which is more prestigious than a local school diploma), and they are used by college personnel in making admissions decisions.

Comment: All districts in Oregon are required to administer the Oregon State Assessments, which consist of reading, writing, and mathematics items at grades 3, 5, 8, and 11. The district included in this study also administers the California Achievement Test (CAT).
* The Oregon assessment plan was changed in the Summer of 1995.

Comment: The state also administers a multiple-choice test. The school included in this study is located in a district that also administers the Stanford Achievement Tests in reading and mathematics at grades 2 through 8.

Comment: The district participates in the Virginia State Assessment Program, which consists of a norm-referenced achievement test battery given at grades 4, 8, and 11. The state also administers the Literacy Passport Test in reading, writing, and mathematics at grade 6 (and at grades 7 through 12 for transfer and non-passing students). In addition, the district is adopting a Basic Skills Assessment to complement the Applications Assessments.
