Master the Basics and Core Subjects to High Standards

Who's Doing It?

First in the World Consortium. A group of 20 districts in suburban Chicago, Illinois, is serving as a model for how Third International Math and Science Study (TIMSS) can be used to improve math and science achievement to high levels of international performance. This "First in the World Consortium" administered the TIMSS test to their students and discovered that their scores were among the first in the world in eighth grade science and among the second in the world in eighth grade math. The high expectations of the First in the World Consortium are achieving results: approximately 50 percent of their students take algebra and geometry by the end of the eighth grade, which is more than double the national average. The First in the World Consortium is using their TIMSS results to improve even further, strengthening curriculum, professional development, teaching, assessment, and parent involvement in learning.
