The Educational System in Japan: Case Study Findings, June 1998

Acknowledgments

The Case Study project was directed by Harold Stevenson and co-directed by Shin-Ying Lee of the University of Michigan's Center for Human Growth and Development. The project was administered by Roberta Nerison-Low, who was responsible for the day-to-day management of the project.

We are indebted to a large number of people who worked closely with us on the Case Study project in Japan. Assistance with the Japan section of the project was provided by Naoko Moriyoshi, Chris Frasz, Yoshihisa Abe, David Crystal and Kazuo Kato who added their valuable knowledge and experience to the task of translating and compiling bibliographic material. Eileen Wu, Professor of Mathematics at Menlo College, contributed greatly to the work on national standards and conducted interviews with authorities in several cities. We would also like to acknowledge the assistance of Naoko Moriyoshi, who conducted all interviews and observations in the Minami City site.

Shigefumi Nagano, of the Japanese National Institute for Educational Research (NIER) helped us to organize the project in Japan. Professors Nagano and Toshio Sawada, also of NIER, provided valuable support. Hideo Kojima, Dean of the School of Education at Nagoya University provided assistance in assuring the success of the project and organized key support for the field researchers. Professor Hiroshi Usui of Hokkaido University of Education served as a consultant to the project.

The authors would also like to thank the participants in the mid-year meeting at Stanford University for their comments and insight. Our greatest debt of gratitude is owed to all of the teachers, parents, students, and administrators who allowed us into their schools, their homes, and their lives. Without their generous participation this project would never have come to fruition.
