Family Literacy: Directions in Research and Implications for Practice -- January 1996

Acknowledgments

We would like to thank the many people whose support and encouragement helped us in planning the symposium and in preparing this report. We are especially grateful to the parents and staff of the Prince George's County, Maryland, Even Start projects who shared their lives with us and their perspectives on how family literacy programs can make a positive difference for families.

We gratefully acknowledge the financial assistance received from the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education's Even Start Program and the Office of Vocational and Adult Education and the commitment from Patricia McKee and Ronald Pugsley. We thank the authors and all who participated in the symposium; without their interest in family literacy and their knowledge and understanding of the issues, this project would not have been successful.

This was a collaborative project and, as with any strong collaboration, many people deserve our thanks for contributing to the work. We are especially grateful to Naomi Karp and David Boesel for their vision and constant support, to Maris Vinovskis for his great insight into research issues, to Veda Bright for her careful attention to details, to Bob LeGrand for his valuable editorial comments, to artist Katherine Van Horne for her sensitive family portrait that graces the cover of this report, and to the staff of Pelavin Research Institute for guiding the process and for helping us to meet our deadlines.
